Frequently Asked Questions

Are your jumping spiders captive bred?

Yes. Nearly all spiders sold by Jump Lab Australia are captive bred. We do not sell wild caught spiders. Captive breeding supports animal welfare, sustainability, and ensures spiders are acclimated to life in human care. Occasionally there may be circumstances where we list limited captive born individuals. These are spiders whose parents were not paired by Jump Lab but have been hatched and raised under our care. Any captive born spiders will be clearly identified.

Do I need to read the care guide before purchasing?

Yes. By purchasing a spider, you confirm that you have reviewed the care guide and have appropriate housing and supplies ready.

What species do you sell?

We specialise in Australian jumping spiders (family Salticidae). Available species vary frequently so it’s best to keep your eyes on our social media pages and website for up to date information.

Are jumping spiders good pets for beginners?

Jumping spiders are suitable for beginners who are willing to learn their care requirements. They are fascinating animals that are very rewarding to keep.

Are jumping spiders shy or curious?

Jumping spiders are naturally curious but cautious. Some individuals are more active and bold than others. If you are looking for specific qualities in your jumping spider it’s best to reach out so we can help guide you.

Is it normal for my spider to hide?

Yes. Hiding is a natural behaviour, especially after shipping, during moulting periods, or when adjusting to a new environment.

What should I feed my jumping spider?

Jumping spiders eat live prey such as crickets. Prey should always be appropriately sized. Jump Lab will ensure feeding guidance is provided for each spider it homes.

How often should I feed my spider?

Feeding frequency depends on age and species. Juveniles eat more frequently than adults. Care guidance is provided with each spider.

Why is my spider not eating?

It is normal for spiders to refuse food before moulting, after shipping, or when stressed. A healthy spider may skip meals without issue. Please get in contact as soon as possible if you are concerned or if your spider hasn’t eaten within 4 days of arrival.

Do jumping spiders need water?

Yes. Spiders hydrate from the prey they consume and water droplets. Light misting on one side of the enclosure is recommended every 2-3 days. This is a broad suggestion and misting may be needed more or less frequently depending on species. Avoid excess moisture and never place a water dish inside the enclosure.

Do I need a suitable enclosure before purchasing a spider?

Yes. A properly ventilated, side opening, escape-proof enclosure is essential before adding a spider to your cart. Please consult the comprehensive care guide for detailed instructions on setup, appropriate sizing and safe furnishings.

Can spiders be elderly when sold?

All Jump Lab spiders become available for new homes at i5. We will always be transparent on the age of any spiders we list. While we will not list elderly spiders it is important to remember that some species (such as male peacocks) only have relatively short lifespans.

Do you guarantee lifespan?
  1. No. Lifespan varies by species, sex and individual. While we ensure spiders are healthy at dispatch, lifespan cannot be guaranteed due to natural biological variation and care.
Do you have a Live Arrival Guarantee?

Yes. Our Live Arrival Guarantee applies when all stated conditions are met. Please review the full Live Arrival Guarantee terms and conditions before ordering.

When will I get my order?

Live spiders are dispatched every Monday to minimise transit time. All items in an order including live spiders will be held and shipped together. Orders containing no live spiders or invertebrates will usually be shipped within 3 working days. Shipping may be delayed due to weather, public holidays, or welfare concerns.

What should I do when my spider arrives?

Open the package promptly and place the opened travel container into your enclosure, the spider will emerge when ready. Please allow it time to settle.

Do you ship Australia wide?

Shipping availability depends on state regulations. Some states or territories may have restrictions or permit requirements. Please refer to our shipping page for detailed information.

Why are spiders often sold out?

Spiders are bred ethically and individually raised. Availability depends on successful breeding cycles and spider wellbeing. Jump Lab focuses on healthy spiders rather than mass breeding.

Why do you focus on captive breeding?

Captive breeding protects wild populations, improves welfare outcomes and ensures spiders are acclimated to captive care. It removes risks for keepers including aged spiders, parasites, ill health and gravid females.

Do you offer support after purchase?

Yes. We are committed to education led care and are happy to help with general or husbandry questions after purchase.
