Choosing captive bred spiders benefits both the animal and the keeper.

Spiders raised in captivity are accustomed to controlled environments, routine feeding and human presence. This results in animals that are already settled into life in an enclosure and experience less stress during handling and transport.

Wild collected spiders often come with unknowns. Age can be difficult to determine and mature females are frequently already paired, leading to repeated egg laying cycles, long periods of seclusion and unexpected clutches of spiderlings; females only need to successfully mate once to lay egg sacks ongoing. These situations can be challenging, time consuming and complex for new keepers to manage. New keepers are unable to release slings unless they are native to your area. Additionally, as Jumping spiders have relatively short lifespans, some wild caught individuals may be elderly at the time of collection and have limited time remaining. There is also an increased risk that wild collected spiders may carry parasites or have been exposed to environmental stressors prior to capture. Captive bred spiders are raised under monitored conditions, with known histories and consistent care.

Wild flipping of spiders can also encourage unethical and unsustainable sourcing practices, placing additional pressure on wild populations particularly when individuals are continually removed from limited localities. It prioritises rapid resale over long term welfare and responsible husbandry.
